Auditory biofeedback for gait rehab
Description
Researchers developed a home-based rehabilitation system that uses wearable sensors to track walking quality in people with lower-limb amputation. The system converts changes in gait into real-time alterations of the user’s music: when gait quality worsens, the music becomes more filtered and resonant; as gait improves, the music sounds clearer.
This creates a continuous closed-loop form of auditory biofeedback rather than a simple on/off cue. In the study, participants who experienced a higher average feedback dose tended to show greater improvement in gait quality over time, even after accounting for their starting gait level and mobility.
The findings are observational and do not prove that the feedback caused the improvement, but they support further study of music-based auditory biofeedback as a practical tool for home rehabilitation.
